Daily Deviation

Given 2010-08-08
Scorching the Evil Snowman by *Jackaloftrades catches your attention immediatly with an amazing use of lighting and draws you to this brilliantly detailed image, with an excellent use of colour and composition and a genuinly creepy villain. ( Suggested by `Krissi001 and Featured by `kangel )

Did the boy knew a snowman would rampage through a God-forsaken forest targeting young girls with grenades so much that he ventured out in the cold of night to attack the vile demon? That was my first thought as I saw this piece, and at that moment, my mind was flooding with ideas of who these characters were, what they were doing and...is that a rib cage under the snowman's melting 'skin'?

The answer being an obviously yes, I can't say that my attention wasn't immediately caught in this piece. Analyzing every detail, seeing the movement and action, I was amazed that so much could be seen and insinuate in a drawing. I admit, my second thought was that the idea of melting a snowman with a flame-thrower made me think it would be something Bill Watterson would have Calvin do to one of his cynical designs, hence, I let out a chuckle when it came to mind.

Back to the Evil Snowman, I am impressed so much can be accomplished with so little. The art style and technique stand out in an impressive form of a horrific tale that not even a master of horrors can accomplish. The bone and flesh-like attributes of the monster stand out and sends (ironically) shivers to the viewer, especially with the flame giving off an excellent lighting. The flame drawn is almost perfect, I can hear the roar of the fire in my mind, and the question comes again: "who carries a flame thrower in the middle of the night?" Cue the second chuckle.

If there is something that I didn't like about the drawing, it would be the eyes of the victim. Being blank has nothing to do with it, but my eyes can't turn away from them. They are too bright for the poor light of the moment, and they appear to be gushing out from their sockets. Frankly, they scare me more than the monster.

To finally put an end to the critique, the drawing is excellent, well-mastered, well-drawn, and it surely deserves the Daily Deviation. I wish I had seen it earlier than today. An amazing job, and I'll surely browse this Deviant's gallery for more.

Wow, what a great detailed piece. First thing I looked at was the beam at the snowman, you even see the light from it on the snow and on him. The highlights and done very well, even on the trees and clouds off to the distance. The tree bark on the snow man is also on of the best I have seen. I am just wondering on why the artist decided to do this. Maybe he didn't like the kids movie or had a bad experience :). Wonderful idea, wonderful detail, and wonderful technique. Makes me want to go kill some snowmen.

I think I'm falling in love with this... I mean, this is not as traditional snowmen and children pics. I love how the trapped kid is holding a grenade and I love the style of the eyes and... wow.
